Wales Environmental expands with the acquisition of Cardiff Drain Cleaning Company

Date Posted: 26 February 2014

Wales Environmental, one of the UK’s fastest-growing waste management companies, has acquired Cardiff Drain Cleaning Company (Cardiff Drain) for an undisclosed sum from owners, Jimmy and Teri Gee. Jimmy Gee, who set up Cardiff Drain in 1975, will remain in a consultative capacity whilst Teri Gee will take up a part-time role going forward.

Established over thirty years ago, Wales Environmental has grown significantly following a management buy-out (MBO) by Managing Director Dave Busby and Business Development Director Llyr Williams in 2011.

Turnover and staff numbers at the Pembrokeshire-based company have both doubled since the pair took over and its annual turnover now exceeds £5m. Their organic growth strategy has seen the company recruit and train 36 new staff and also invest heavily in new equipment and vehicles.

Wales Environmental has also maintained its focus on customer service and operational excellence that has seen it consistently placed at the top of customer supplier rankings.

Since 2011 Wales Environmental has built on its well-established commercial and residential client base. It has also increased its operational footprint beyond its West Wales heartland into other parts of Wales as well as the North West of England and the Midlands.

Acquiring Cardiff Drain will further accelerate Wales Environmental’s growth. In addition to using Cardiff Drain as a platform for growth in South East Wales, the company will use its new Cardiff base to help service expected new contracts in the English border counties and South West England.

Commenting on the acquisition, Dave Busby said: “Our organic growth strategy has paid real dividends to date. We’ve invested in the business to increase the range of services we offer and have secured a number of high-value, multi-service contracts. Acquiring Cardiff Drain is a key part of our long-term expansion strategy. It has significantly increased our capacity as well as our client base and also provides us with an operating base in Cardiff.

“Cardiff Drain has built an impressive reputation and has many loyal customers. We’re committed to building on this reputation and working with these customers as we integrate the two companies’ operations.” Jimmy Gee, Cardiff Drain’s founder welcomed the acquisition. He said: “I’m proud to have established Cardiff Drain and grown it into the successful business it is today. I’m pleased to hand over the reins to Dave and Llyr as I’ve been keen to step back for some time. They have some ambitious plans and it’s great to know that Cardiff Drain will play such a pivotal role in them. I wish them and the staff well.

” Wales Environmental’s chairman Owen Sennitt believes that the acquisition is a significant step for the company. He said: “Wales Environmental has grown significantly since Dave and Llyr bought it in 2011 and they’ve made excellent progress turning their vision into reality. Investing in the business as part of their organic growth strategy has paid off as it is now well placed to grow further thanks to this acquisition.

“Wales Environmental’s reputation for high customer satisfaction levels combined with flexible local service delivery are real USPs and this acquisition will help the company to strengthen its ability to live up to this reputation.”

Cardiff Drain’s lorries will continue to be a familiar sight on South Wales’ roads following the acquisition as Wales Environmental plans to retain this brand.
